Substance Abuse Committee: Eric LaChappa, Mark Romero, David Diaz & Anthony Pico
SCTCA Staff: Denis Turner, Executive Director & Recording Secretary

The members of the committee discussed the IHS/CAO Annual Tribal Consultation March 11 - 14, 2013

The Annual Tribal Consultation is hosted by the Indian Health Service/California Area Office, Pala Band of Mission Indians, and Indian Health Council, Inc. The event took place on Monday, March 11 and concluded on Thursday, March 14. Topics include budget formulation, contract health services, Affordable Care Act, YRTC facilities, tribal consultation, and behavioral health.

Chairmen Romero and I will be attending a Training Conference in Tucson Arizona May 2nd and 3rd. The organization that is offering this training is called Diverse Voices in Prevention and the topic will be culturally competent practices in the areas of prevention among youth or giving parents the tools needed for speaking with their youth about the harms and consequences of prescription, alcohol, and drug abuse.

At a future meeting the committee decided to invite Dr. Tweedy the director of human services at the Rincon Indian Health Council and Charlene Manzano the director of human services at the Southern Indian health Council. The purpose of inviting these respected professionals in their field of Substance and Alcohol Abuse is to help us put together an education component in regards to a need for an adult residential treatment facility located within one of the reservations.

The collaboration of Walk of the Warrior and Indian Voices has updated the recovery section of the news paper. We have listed a schedule for all the Alcoholics Anonymous and the Narcotic Anonymous meetings within the reservations.
